India Gate – Why it’s so popular?

India Gate is a very unique tourist attraction in Delhi

Why?

Because India Gate is a memorial built in commemoration of more than 80,000 Indian soldiers who were killed during World War I. The monument boasts of it’s imposing 42 meters high arch and was designed by the famous architect Edwin Lutyens.

Within India Gate, you will find Amar Jawan Jyoti - a memorial symbolised by an inverted bayonet and soldier's helmet over it with eternal flame burning beside it. It was built in 1972 underneath the India Gate arch to commemorate soldiers martyred in the Indo-Pak War of 1971. Every year during Republic day prime minister of India pays homage to the martyred soldiers.

• • The structure is 42m high. The whole structure is built in marble and in read and pale sandstones

• • The architect was Sir Edwin Lutyens, an Englishman who designed numerous other war memorials and was also the principal planner of New Delhi. The cornerstone was laid in 1921 by the duke of Connaught, third son of Queen Victoria
